The Appalachian Center for Craft is a jewel in the Center Hill Lake area. The campus sets upon over 500 acres of wooded land, overlooking breathtaking Center Hill Lake. The Center offers a top notch gallery, one of the finest in the southeast, displaying over 100 plus regional artists’ traditional and fine art crafts. The center also prides itself in offering up to twenty cutting-edge exhibitions featuring a variety of fine craft and mixed media work by regional, national and international artists in their three exhibition galleries. Originally run by the Tennessee Arts Commission, this nationally acclaimed center became part of the Music and Art Department of Tennessee Technological University (TTU) in Cookeville as a satellite campus in 1985. Currently, they have about 135 students. Offering Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees and Master of Fine Art degrees, the Center offers competitive resident artists programs with instruction, housing and studio space. The Center also offers non-degree Craft Certificate programs in clay, fibers, glass, metals, and wood that are open to the public. The Appalachian Center for Craft is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Now I, “Annie”, love art. I have since my years in Belgium and Europe when I was introduced to contemporary art by my dear friend Kathryn Feldman, a known artist in France and Belgium who has been commissioned in France and has had her work displayed in several galleries in France, Germany, and Belgium. I was so excited to find such a wonderful gallery located so close to the lake filled with the works of artists seemingly bursting from the hills, valleys and towns of the Upper Cumberland. Artists are literally coming out of the woodwork to showcase their work at so many different venues, including the Appalachian Center, the Smithville Jamboree, and “Annie’s favorite” in the fall, the Off the Beaten Path Studio Tour which showcases many artists. Enjoy some of the Center’s seasonal special events and kick off spring with the annual Celebration of Craft with live craft demonstrations, live music, kid’s activities, hands on craft projects for kids, silent auction, gallery discounts and more. Christmas is special at the Center with the Holiday Festival that takes place following Thanksgiving Day. This event features live demonstrations, one-of-a-kind gifts, handmade ornaments, and exhibitions. If you like to hike, they also have a hiking trail at the Center. William Stacey was a member of the Craft Center’s Maintenance Staff over a 17 year period; he loved to work on the trail system. That trail system is now open and dedicated to his memory. There are 4 wonderful trails that range in length from a 1.3 mile loop to a 3.7 mile round trip that is rated moderate to difficult. The trails are beautiful in the spring with the wildflowers and majestic views of Center Hill Lake from the many overlooks. The Center also has a coffee shop where you can enjoy coffee and a scone or a bowl of soup and sandwich during the lunch hours. The Craft Center has meeting space with a spacious conference room available for meetings, events, and weddings. They also offer a catering service available on-site. The gallery is open seven days a week from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM and also offers online shopping at www.tntech.edu/craftcenter.
