Center Hill Lake

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the annual Center Hill Lake Visitor’s Guide! The guide and website are filled with excellent day trip ideas, off the beaten track fun places to visit, information on the great marinas, places to eat, shop, and lodging around the region. Center Hill Lake’s close proximity to Nashville has allowed many Nashvillians to play here on the weekends and during summer family vacations, buy weekend or retirement homes, and yet stay close to home for a fun filled family getaway.

Smithville, the county seat of DeKalb County and the heartbeat of the Center Hill Lake region, is a bustling community with a growing historic downtown square. Their tireless Chamber Director, Ms. Suzanne Williams and her excellent staff of volunteers and business leaders organize annual events, attract new commerce, and keep newcomers abreast of the pertinent information that they need to make their new home, “home”. Center Hill Lake is rich in beauty, and brimming with creativity in the company of the many artists, craftspeople, and entrepreneurs in the region. This makes the Center Hill Lake region and Smithville truly a community woven from many diverse individuals creating a magnificent canvas. Some of the residents have lived here their whole lives, yet many have moved here to be a part of this rich fabric. The camaraderie between newcomers and locals is apparent and the community pride is abundant. One of the highlights of the year is the Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree and Craft Festival which attracts over 100,000 visitors each year with 200 craft booths and amazing bluegrass, country, folk and Appalachian musical talent from across the state of Tennessee and the Southeast. The Off the Beaten Path Studio Tour (www.OffTheBeatenPathTour.com) is an amazing fall art tour through the region. It is a fun, interesting, and scenic tour of art studios within the Center Hill Lake, Smithville area. In 2009, 26 area artists participated at 11 stops. You can watch as they demonstrate their amazing talents while creating their works of art in genre such as wood carving, canvas, glass blowing, weaving and tapestry, pottery, photography, sculpture, chair making, and so much more. Stella Luna Art Gallery in Smithville is at the heart of this tour. Their love of art, people, and one another has brought this high end gallery to Middle Tennessee featuring beautiful pieces, and showcasing many of the very talented artists of the region. The Joe L. Evins Appalachian Center for Craft is a top notch school and museum for artists from around the country. It also offers great opportunities for shoppers, and those looking to learn more about the crafts featured through workshops and other programs throughout the year. If you are looking for places to eat, many of the marinas have excellent lakeside dining facilities, serving seafood, grilled steaks, and outstanding summer fare. Need somewhere to stay? Check out our accommodation listings which highlights houseboat, cabin, and private chalet rentals, along with bed and breakfasts, camping facilities, and more! Enjoy your stay at Center Hill Lake and make sure to visit some of Annie’s favorites!
